Long-distance (up to 50m) solution specifications using POF links with visible LED are included in 1394b activities. This technology will use IEEE 1394 to ensure the minimum distance required in creating a home network with information home electronics in the future. The IEEE 1394.b specifications are expected to be the ultimate scenario for home networks that will most likely arise in the near future, and POF is being focused on as an important and key transmission media to support home multimedia in the 21st century.
The proposal for the POF distance extension was recommended by Sony and Mitsubishi Rayon in the autumn of 1995, with the start of sales of the ESKAMEGA. NEC has also joined in to form the 3 central companies making the proposal for standardization in 1997. (See Home Network for the background/history of the proposal.)
